Whats news?

Hello. I've been a little busy the past week. No blog posts from me for a while! But some exciting things have been happening.

Most excitingly, my cookbook 'My Abuela's Table' has been shortlisted for an APA Book Design Award in the category of best designed cookbook. Wow! So exciting. I am in some amazing company, so I am just happy to be shortlisted. I am looking forward to going to the award ceremony in Sydney in May and hob-nobbing with the publishing industry. Yay!

In other news, I have been busy getting some giclee art prints done of my 'Mrs Rabbit' painting and 'Daylesford Dreaming' (a popular one at the markets last year!). You can now buy these prints over at my Etsy shop. It's the first time I've printed giclee prints (thanks Lantern Printing), and I'm loving the quality...amazing!

One last piece of news: I am heading back to Rose Street markets tomorrow. It will be the first market stall I have had there since 2007! I can't believe it's been 5 years already. So I will be there with art prints, stamps galore, and a few other bits and bobs. Come and say hi. Rose St, Fitzroy (11am-5pm).

Website!

So, I have been "working on my website" for the past 5 years. Terrible, I know. Time has just got away from me, and it has always slid down my 'to do list'.

But, huzzah, it is up and running now! Take a squiz here!

There are still a few teething problems I am trying to iron out, but I am pretty proud of myself for re-learning Dreamweaver all by myself (it's been about 4 years since I have looked at Dreamweaver) and managing to battle with my web server and provider.

Maybe web design will be my new thing!? hmmm...maybe?

Acrylics

After years of sticking to watercolours, I revisited my box of acrylics yesterday. It has been 6 years...many colours were all dried up which made me sad as they are expensive paints! But I found enough colours to create a little portrait.

OK, animal portraits dressed in human clothes have been done to death, but I really LOVE them. I have been wanting to do such portraits of my two dogs, but I have started with something safe...a rabbit. Again, done to death, but I don't care. I love my Mrs. Rabbit.

New book: Sweetie! 50 delectable treats

Hurrah! A new book I designed and illustrated is about to hit the book shelves (on February 1 to be exact). Sweetie! (Hardie Grant Books) was possibly the hardest book I have had to design so far - only because I spent about 8 weeks staring at photographs of the most amazingly delicious looking sweets having to paint them in full detail.

I admit, I ended up baking a few of these delicious recipes, and delicious they certainly are. In here you will find little bite size desserts: cake pops; brownies; whoopie pies (I had no idea what these were until I did this book!); alcoholic iceblocks for the grown ups; and ice-cream sandwiches. I could go on, but I am getting hungry just thinking about all of these yummies, and it's only breakfast time!

You can pick up a copy of Sweetie! for only $19.95 in a week or so (official date of release is February 1) at all good book shops or online (although I prefer to support the physical book stores).

I have started a new blog!

But I will still be updating this one of course! My new blog over here is a little illustrated journey into wedding planning. Yes, I am channeling my nervous energy about getting married into illustration form to stop me from becoming a Bridezilla.

On a shoe-string budget I (and my boy!) will be organising everything, so I have a lot of illustrating ahead of me! Wish me luck!

BHLDN

It took me a while to work out what BHLDN actually stood for, but it finally clicked - Beholden. How slow am I?!!

Anyhoo, I have just spent pretty much my whole weekend on the BHLDN website, which I stumbled upon during some random web searching for wedding dresses (yes! I am getting organised early on...we haven't even set a date yet!).

I just had to share this site with you. Even if you are not getting married...read on!!

Not only did I just buy my wedding dress from there (sight unseen - totally unlike me), but also purchased a (super cute 'woods' inspired) cake stand and put together a couple of mood boards for the big day - saved on their site for future reference. There are even 'how-to's for hair and make-up, and even a quiz to find out what kind of bride you are (ie: what dresses/wedding styles might suit you) - who knew planning for a wedding could be so simple!

I would never have considered purchasing my wedding dress online before, but I fell in love with the dresses on BHLDN instantly, and with their free returns (they even pay for the return postage!), I felt the risk was pretty minimal. Plus I LOVE my dress. Most dresses include feedback from previous purchasers which is really helpful. It's great to hear from a purchaser that the dress is even better in real life. And some dresses even have video to show how the dress moves when you walk in it. Hurrah!

Festivities...

Three weeks of over indulging have just come to an end for me. And what a fabulous three weeks it has been. Starting with a week in Wandiligong, a little town just outside of Bright in Victoria. I like to call it 'paradise'. Perfect weather, great company, lots of food and wine and lovely walks taking in the country side.

I was even inspired to throw myself off a cliff...well, that is attached to a paraglider...and with a professional behind me. What an awesome experience. We got up to 1,400 meters and could see forever (well it seemed that way). Just when I thought the day couldn't get any better, my boy took me for a picnic on top of Mount Buffalo, and proposed to me! Yay! Five years in the making. It was worth the wait as I got the most amazingly beautiful diamond ring. I did a little drawing of it it was so nice. I can't do it justice with my little sketch though...but it's the thought that counts!

If that all wasn't enough, we just spent a week in the Barossa Valley, drinking wine and eating (again...too much). We stayed at a great B&B in Penrice. It's garden was full of honey eaters. I love those birds! I had to draw them after taking a bizillion photos of them...

And that ends my three weeks of slothing, eating, drinking and generally gaining weight. Now back to work and a bit of a detox.

My oh my! Very excited today, and I have to brag a little bit...

My book: 'My Abuela's Table' (published by Hardie Grant Books) has been included in Sydney Morning Herald's list of the 'Best Cook Books of 2011'! Wheeee!!

I'm the first picture in the list too...which I am sure doesn't mean mine is NUMBER ONE, but I will pretend it does :)

Lake Murray, La Mesa (San Diego)

Because I am just not busy enough (!?) I am doing the Sketchbook Project 2012 this year...I fill out a little sketchbook and send it back to Art House Coop and then it goes on tour with thousands of other sketchbooks. How fun! You can choose a theme to start you off, and, since I've been traveling a bit, I went with 'Travel with Me'.

My top ten favourite things about Mexico City - Part one

I have just spent the past 3 weeks in Mexico City, visiting my family, eating a lot of amazing food and exploring the city I have been to many times before, but never really had the chance to see properly.

This trip, armed with my tour guide (a.k.a. cousin Lavi), I soaked in Mexico City like a leaf soaks in sunshine.

Over the next little while I will be posting about my favourite things about Mexico City. In no particular order as I loved everything equally (OK, maybe the food and my family a little more than anything else).

Here is numero uno: Mexico City's architecture.

I was blown away by the amazing architecture around the city. From the most amazing houses (read: mansions) on Reforma (the main street leading into the city centre) home to many of the world's embassies, to the ruins of Templo Mayor - one of the main Aztec temples in the capital Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City).

Catedral Metropolitana

Here is my rendition of la Catedral Metropolitana (the Metropolitan Cathedral) in the main square of Mexico City (the Zocalo). Side note: I painted this with natural watercolours I purchased in Mexico - the colours are produced from plants and soils and are the same as those used by Mesoamericans centuries ago. Very cool!

A bit of history: this Cathedral was built in the 16th century by the meanie Cortes when the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs. Cortes tore down the neighbouring Templo Mayor and incorporated nearly all the stone from the Aztec temple into the new Cathedral. You can visit the ruins of Templo Mayor next door to the Cathedral. It's amazing to see them side by side and to imagine what happened all those many centuries ago.

The Metropolitan Cathedral has been slowly sinking into the soft lake bottom beneath, as Mexico City was built on a lake. Many of the city's buildings are slowly sinking, however there is thankfully a lot of restoration underway to save these wonderful landmarks.

Viva Mexico

It's been a long time since my last post...bad blogger! I have been busy preparing for my trip to Mexico (and trying to get work finished before hand!).

I am here now, after a few nice days in San Diego. I am staying put in Mexico City for 2 and a bit weeks which is very exciting. I have lots of family here which is even better.

I was finally able to give a copy of my book 'My Abuela's Table' to my abuela. She was very, very happy. I hope I did her proud. I am wishing I had taken a photo of the moment I gave it to her, but alas, I think I was a bit too nervous at the time!

Yesterday was my first day in Mexico City. I have been here a number of times before, but never have I seen the city looking so clean and green. Amazing. I could even see the volcanoes in the distance covered in snow (they used to always be covered by smog - not anymore).

I went to the Museum of Anthropology - which was AMAZING. Again, I have been there before, but as a little kid with not much appreciation for what was in front of me. But this time around I was inspired beyond belief. Especially by the Peyote bead work - a few photos below. You will see what I mean.

I am off to Chapultapec - the Castle in Mexico city. I went as a kid and was blown away by the murals  and can't wait to see it all again. I will blog about that in the next few days!

Bliss is...having Koko Black as a client. Well, maybe it is also termed as 'over-indulgence'.

A couple of months ago I did a job for the wonderful Melbourne based chocolate company, providing the illustrations for their re-vamped Sandpiper range of choccies. I created three cheeky birds (Sandpipers funnily enough!) to grace the packaging of milk, dark and white chocolate buttons, nuts and other yummy things such as liquorice bows, orange segments (to die for!) and nougat.

I was also lucky enough to have a chance to work closely with the fabulous Studio Round who designed the packaging and new sub-brand direction. I love Studio Round's work, so I was chuffed to be providing the illustrations for their overall design.

Meet Me At Mikes Crafty Journal

This month, the goddess of craft Pip Lincolne released a new crafty journal which I had the great honour of designing (we share Hardie Grant as a publisher!). The Meet Me At Mikes Crafty Journal is a combination of craft projects, 'how to's, and blank pages for you to jot down your own crafty ideas and thoughts.

I had lots of fun working on this journal, and it inspired me to pick up the knitting needles once again. Thanks for the inspiration Pip!

Dayelsford...

My boy and I spent last week in Dayelsford - possibly my most favourite place in Victoria... possibly Australia. We stayed in a lovely little cottage which was wonderfully styled with all the things I like (lots of lovely woolen blankets, retro furniture, a fireplace and a big, beautiful bath). Our two dogs also enjoyed the big back yard (and we enjoyed that it was properly fenced - some accommodation places use the term 'pet friendly' so loosely!).

First night there, we had the most AMAZING dinner at 'A Perfect Drop'. If you are ever in Dayelsford you have to go there. The food is fabulous, service wonderful and the atmosphere, lovely. T'was the start to a lovely few days.

I think this was the first break away I've had where I have been able to completely relax, not thinking about much at all but knitting, drawing and reading. How lovely is it when you find yourself being able to do that!? I did some drawing, inspired by things I saw around the place.

Vietnamese Street Food by Tracey Lister and Andreas Pohl

A book I recently designed for Hardie Grant Books has just hit the shelves...Vietnamese Street Food by Tracey Lister and Andreas Pohl. This book was such fun to work on, although quite torturous at times staring at photographs of delicious Vietnamese food often late at night and quite hungry.

The street photography (by Michael Fountoulakis) in this book is stunning. Colourful and vibrant. I took elements of the cute and kitch tablecloths and wonderful French tiles to create colourful watercolour patterns that feature through out the book. Not just full of delicious recipes, this book also features a number of Vietnamese street food vendors and their wonderful stories, as well as a great directory of herbs, noodles, and sauces.

This is the first book I designed after 'My Abuela's Table' and I'm quite chuffed at how it turned out. It's nerve racking when you are designing someone else's book, but I think the authors and publishers were happy with it. Hurrah! I love my job.

It's out now at all good book shops for RRP $39.95. Go buy it...NOW!

Spiced biscuits... my style:

I have been a little side tracked this week with the boyfriend at home, and friends to visit. Not much work was done today, but I did make these yummy biscuits from a favourite cookbook from my childhood: Family Circle Test Recipe Cookbook.

They were supposed to be Gingerbread biscuits, but we didn't have ginger in the house, so they ended up being 'spice biscuits' instead. Still delicious! Recipe below.

Ingredients:

125 g unsalted butter
1/3 cup soft dark brown sugar (we were out of this, so I just used caster sugar and it worked just fine)
1/3 cup golden syrup
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 cups plain flour
1/3 cup self raising flour
1 tablespoon ground ginger (I used a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg and a dash of all spice)
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Icing:
1 egg white
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 cup icing sugar (I used icing mixture...I hate how lumpy pure icing sugar is)
food dye (if you want...I like the white against the cookie colour)

Preheat oven to 180 C.
Brush 2 or 3 oven trays with oil or melted butter and line with non-stick baking paper.
Using electric beaters, beat the butter, sugar and syrup in a small bowl until light and creamy. Add the egg gradually, beating thoroughly after each addition.

Transfer the mixture to a large bowl. Sift the flours, spice(s) and bicarb onto the butter mixture and use a knife to mix until just combined. Use a well-floured hand to combine the dough thoroughly, then turn onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until smooth.

Line a large chopping board with non-stick baking paper. Roll out the dough on a board to 5 mm thickness. (Flour the rolling pin to stop the dough sticking). Refrigerate on the board for 15 minutes or until the dough is firm enough to cut (I skipped this bit cause I was impatient).
Cut the dough into shapes with cutters (I used super cute ones from Ikea). Press any remaining dough together, then re-roll and cut into shapes. Place the shapes onto prepared trays and bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool the biscuits on trays and then ice.

To make icing, place the egg white in a small dry bowl. Using electric beaters, beat the egg white until foamy. Add the lemon juice gradually; beat until thick and creamy. If you want to add colouring, divide icing into separate bowls and add colour. Spoon icing into small paper icing bags (I used a zip lock bag and snipped a tiny bit off one corner). Pipe your design!

This is my extra bit: Once iced, pop biscuits back into oven for a few minutes. This will make the icing go hard. YUM!

I love a good High Pressure system

This weekend just passed was a glorious one in Melbourne. Heck, it still is fabulous as I type this in my backyard sitting in the sun. It's been a long, wet winter, so I am happy to be feeling the warmth of the sun finally.

To celebrate this Spring weather, I revamped my veggie patch. Out with the old leeks and beetroot (the only things that actually grew very well over winter) and in with the new summer veggie patch. For the first time I planted from seed, so I hope they grow! Grow my pretties! Grow!

Exciting times!

I am entering the big wide world of illustrating children's books! It's a little scary, but exciting at the same time. I've never illustrated a kid's book before (apart from when I was 12 and wrote and illustrated my own silly stories), so this is pretty cool. Currently I am teaching myself how to storyboard and general character development. And what great therapy this is for my little 'I-can't-draw-people' insecurity problem!

I've been researching heaps of children's book illustrators and it's so great to gain new inspiration from some fabulous talent out there. I've always loved kid's books, but only now am really beginning to appreciate how amazing they are in terms of, not just the illustrations themselves, but the pacing and layout of the books. And I am finding lots of new (to me anyway) great illustrators, whom I probably wouldn't have found if it weren't for this job I've been given.

As I can't really share any of my initial sketches as I work, I thought I would share a few illustrators who I have stumbled upon in book shops and online, and have come to adore. Illustration heaven!

Oliver Jeffers:

I've always loved Oliver Jeffer's work. My favourite book is The Great Paper Caper. I can't wait to have kids so I can share his books with them :)

Feast: SBS's new food magazine!

I picked up my copy of the very first issue of 'Feast' the lovely new magazine from SBS Food. How bright and lovely is the cover? I love how different it is to other food magazines and the actual textile feel of the cover is lovely and soft.

Alright, there is another reason why I love this magazine... because I am in it! Well, my book is! It is featured over a whopping 5 pages. Lots of recipes and illustrations. So excited to be in the very first issue of Feast. Hurrah!

(oh, and there are other amazing recipes in the magazine too... this issue has a great focus on Mexican and South American food).

Marie Claire South Africa!

So, being featured in Frankie magazine's issue #41 was pretty amazing and fun, but there is something extra cool about being in Marie Claire South Africa this month. It makes me extra warm and fuzzy that people all over the world read my blog. Hurrah!

South East Asian Food by Rosemary Brissenden...illustrations by ME!

So, I've been doing lots of work for Hardie Grant Books over the past few months, and one of my smaller jobs has just hit the shelves. I did the little illustrations that appear in the newly published South East Asian Food, by Rosemary Brissenden.

This book has been around since the 1970's, but recently re-vamped and re-released by Hardie Grant. This is an amazing bible of Asian food. I've already started cooking from it and I'm chuffed to have my illustrations appear in such a delicious book.

Mmmm...chocolate

Not just any old chocolate...Koko Black chocolate.

The lovely Koko Black team sent me a nice big box of their beautiful chocolates to congratulate me on publishing My Abuela's Table. How amazingly wonderful is that!? Needless to say I have almost devoured them all. No restraint here!

'Why?' you might ask, did they send me choccies? Maybe because I am a serial-entrant into their drawing competition each year! I thought it was only fitting that I painted a few of the chocolates and post them here.

ARGH!! My Abuela's Table is on the book shelves!

OK, so this is not the most flattering photo of me, but I had to post it to show my look of glee at first spotting my book at Dymocks. It was supposed to be released next Wednesday, so this was a nice surprise. It actually felt like I had brought in a stack and placed them on the bookshelf as a joke. A little surreal and odd!

Does it look odd to anyone else?

I must admit, I was a little tempted to hang around to see if anyone picked it up to look at it, but it was pretty quiet in Dymocks so I might have been there until closing. Cross fingers for lots of sales and lots of positive feedback.

You can pick up My Abuela's Table at most book stores I think. Hurray! And it's only $35. How they make a hard cover book with a French folded dust jacket for $35, I have no idea. It cost me around $80 to make my hand-bound version!

Sauvage

I have recently noticed a growing trend for magazines to present fashion spreads, not through the use of photography, but through lovely illustrations. I'm not sure why, but it makes me want to own the clothes even more.

I thought to myself: 'I'd like to give that a try' (the fashion illustration part, that is). So I thought I would create my own opportunity and approached my lovely friend Edith Holloway who runs her own online lingerie company 'Sauvage'. Sauvage stocks the most amazingly beautiful underwear and swimwear, some of which I can only dream of wearing. Brands range from Miss Mandalay to Pleasure State to O Lingerie and oh-so many more. There are racy lacy bras to cute boy-style undies. The swimwear range is all very lovely as well. Sauvage also offers free returns or exchanges. So if it doesn't fit you don't have to stress too much! I like this a lot.

It was tough choosing which pieces to illustrate, but I chose a few of my favourites..and it just so happens a lot of these items are on sale at the moment (even better!).

Another little sneak peek: My Abuela's Table

Just over 3 weeks to go until My Abuela's Table hits the book stores. I am beside myself with excitement and it's really difficult to not post lots more images of the book here... but I don't want to spoil all the little surprises...like the cheeky piggy and chickens that appear in the book. But here is a quirky cod dressed in Spanish military attire. I had so much fun painting him. I think he looks very silly and he made me laugh when I finished him.

Time to start getting serious...

I only have two weeks left of my 'day job' before I enter the scary world of full-time freelance illustration/design. Ever since I was 16 I've been working, with a steady income. But now I am saying goodbye to financial security and am embracing the roller coaster that lays ahead. Hmmm... and paper work... and doing book-keeping... all of which I know nothing about.

So, now that I have to be super proactive at earning an income, I've been adding a few things to my Etsy shop of late with more to come very soon. My label: One Black Sheep was born almost 5 years ago now! But now it's time to get serious with it (and my illustration work of course).

I've been stocking my wares in a great shop in Wynnum (Brisbane) called The Collective Store. Owned and run by the wonderful Leonie McIntosh, the store is full of wonderful crafty/arty goods - all handmade with love. Living in Melbourne, I am sad I have not yet been to visit the store, but urge all you Queenslanders and visitors to do so. It's a wonderful concept - I have my own little shelf which I pay a modest fee to display my products and I get to keep all my profits. No commissions taken away which is always nice :-) What a great way for artists/crafters to sell their wares, and it results in a shop full of wonderfully eclectic handmade goodness.

A sneak peek!!: My Abuela's Table

The count down is on... 5 weeks until my illustrated Mexican cookbook 'My Abuela's Table' is published by the wonderful people at Hardie Grant Books. Back when I created this book for my Publication elective at uni, I had no idea this is where it would end up. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about it!

The finished book came in the other day from the printer/binder and I have to say, it looks (and smells!) lovely. I thought I would share a few photos sporadically over the next few weeks to whet your appetite until it comes out.

Procrastination my old friend.

I am working on some really exciting stuff for Hardie Grant at the moment, but I still suffer from bouts of procrastination here and there...especially when I have a tight deadline (the nearest one being, monday morning).

In the clean up of my desk, I notice that I doodle a lot on random bits of paper. This doesn't help with clutter (a problem of mine) as I feel the need to keep all my doodles (good or bad). I've decided to post a few every now and then. To keep track of my random doodling (I really should learn to keep a sketch book, but I buy them and am too scared to wreck them with potentially bad drawings).

I think I did this little doodle while sitting at the Northcote markets one year. Not great, but hey, I have a fear of drawing people and faces, so it's part of my self prescribed therapy to put them out there.

Koko Black Easter box

I've just spent the past week busy having my appendix removed and being bed ridden in recovery mode. I never really knew what pain was before having to go under the knife. But I'm slowly recovering.

One thing that certainly cheered me up was receiving a parcel the day after I got home from hospital, from Koko Black. I had no idea what it could be and was thrilled to discover it was 6 chocolate Easter boxes with my illustration on it. Sulphur Creek Tasmania

I've just spent a lovely week traveling around the North-West area of Tasmania. I spent my birthday at Sulphur Creek, which is just west of Penguin a little town known (funnily enough) for it's local 'little penguins'. We decided to park the motor-home (such fun!) right next to the beach at Sulphur Creek (no smell of sulphur detected).

We tried to find the penguins as they came up to shore after dark, but I think we either missed them completely... just couldn't see them... or they came to shore later. I think it might have been the later. We were woken in the middle of the night by the noisy little buggers right outside our window. The early wake up call wasn't all bad though as the stars were amazing and I got to draw this little memory the next day...

The great gingernut biscuit mystery

When I moved from Queensland down to Canberra many years ago, I had quite a shock. No, it wasn't the freezing cold temperature, or the hoards of public servants. It was the Gingernut biscuits. Arnotts Gingernut biscuits.

These little brown discs of yumminess are my all time favorite biscuits (if you leave them out a couple of days they go chewy and lovely). HOWEVER. On my arrival to Canberra, having that first hot cuppa tea with said biscuits I almost packed my bags and flew home again. OK, perhaps I am exaggerating a little, but it was a rude shock to find the gingernuts in the ACT (and NSW) were hard little buggers that almost broke my front teeth first bite.

I should add here that the gingernuts in Queensland are lovely thin, dark biscuits with a hint of spiciness and a complex flavour. These impostors were not my beloved gingernuts. At first I thought Arnotts had just changed the recipe, until I realised, on a visit back north, the biscuits in Queensland were still the same.

I dealt with this as best as I knew how - having my boyfriend at the time send me packs of Queensland gingernuts in the mail when I had run out. I moved to Victoria a couple of years later. And almost fell off my chair when I realised the gingernuts in Victoria were different again. What the hell?

Years later, bored at work one day, I emailed Arnotts with all the important philosophical questions: why are your gingernut biscuits having an identity crisis? I was pretty surprised when they actually emailed me back with a big spiel around why they were different from state to state:

"We used to have different bakeries in different states, each making a Ginger Nut biscuit that the locals loved. When Arnott's became a national company we looked at the possibility of selling one Ginger Nut nationally. But each time we tested it, people told us that they preferred their homegrown variety. (translate as: sales dramatically dropped)

So now in Queensland, Ginger Nuts are thin and sweet, with a dark colour. In New South Wales they are small, thick and hard, with a light colour. In Victoria and Tasmania, they are bigger, softer and sweeter. While in South and Western Australia, the biscuits look similar to their Victorian cousins, but taste sweeter."

I don't think they will listen to my call to make all gingernuts the same as Queensland. I will just have to keep importing them from the Sunshine state. They know what they are doing up there...

Queensland Flood Appeal Auction...

It's been a sad week for Queenslanders (and all Australians) with the horrible floods that have devastated the State. As a Queenslander, and 'Brisbanite' by birth, I thought I should help out somehow.

I stumbled upon this great blog which has been encouraging crafty folk to auction their handmade wares with all proceeds going to the flood relief. What a perfect way to help out!

So... I am auctioning a little package which includes:

Dear blog... sorry I have been neglecting you.

I thought finishing uni would mean lots of spare time on my hands. But alas, not. I like to make my life hectic, and the Northcote markets have certainly stepped up to the plate in that respect.

My house is overrun by stamps. Rubber stamps. For my birthday this year, my lovely boyfriend bought me a stamp making machine. These things aren't cheap, and now is the time the little UV light box comes up with the goods. And that, it has.

Here are a few images of my stamps. I have a lot more designs, but these were the only ones left after last night's stall and the only ones I had to photograph!

A selected few - the subject of new cards I am selling at the Kris Kringle Markets (Northcote Town Hall... Thursday nights until Xmas!) I thought it was fun selling my crafty stuff, but it's really something else when someone parts with money for your illustrations :-) I'd like to do this for a living please.

These birds are also the subject of a 2011 calendar. Whether I have these done in time for the final two markets is another thing! Maybe 2012 calendar?

And I'm done.

After 3 long hard years, I have finally finished my Communication Design degree. Hurrah.

It really couldn't have finished better, winning best folio. How that happened, I have no idea. But it put a smile on my face that made my cheeks hurt.

Now that I have finished I am a mixture of excitement, nerves and fear. Putting myself out there is not something that comes naturally, but I will try my best as I am itching to get my career started!

Until then, I am busy with my craft. I will be at the Northcote Town Hall markets this November-December selling my wares before Xmas. I am really looking forward to it this year! I am also stocking my craft in a new shop in Wynnum, Queensland (a little seaside suburb of Brisbane), which is were my Grandma grew up and where her ashes now lie. I like that I am a little closer to her in spirit.

The shop is called The Collective Store. I am pretty excited and hope that I sell some stuff there. It's nice to be in a real shop :-)

I have been working on a new identity for my craft line, which has always been called One Black Sheep, but now has a look that is in keeping with my current illustrative style. I like my sheep. I think he is cute. He shall be named Henry.

I am still working on business card/swing tags/etc, but it's a start! Website is also on the way.

10 days until the end of my degree

Procrastination has hit me again. This time with a project I just can't seem to get into. 'Hate' is a strong word, but I have to use it to describe how I feel about this project. It will get done in time, but until then, I have decided to waste some time and post some photos of my finished cookbook. Which, I must say, I loved doing.

I hand bound it (hard cover and section sewn) which was a feat, but I think it turned out really nicely. Not sure I want to hand bind a whole heap of them, but maybe I will get faster at it and it won't be so bad. Or I'll get a book deal and someone else can do it! (I can dream can't I!?)

We had a designer from Penguin books come and judge our classes books, and I won the best illustrated book (along with another very talented girl). Which was nice :-)

October 4 - 5th

Oh dear. My posting has fallen by the way side again. I had done the following little drawings last week and had no time to post them. Since then, have had no time to draw! For my blog that is. Just for my book...

Good news is I have finished my book! Ready to hand in tomorrow. I'm pretty pleased with the finished result! I think I will be posting some photos of it in the next few days to show that I wasn't lying about having so much work to do! It ended up being 104 pages - all illustrated. I think there were around 250+ separate drawings done for this book. Hence, I am now pretty tired!

If anyone is wondering whether the whole 'illustrating your purchases' thing actually works... well, it does. Since taking a break from it (due to overwhelming uni work load) I have been a bit more frivolous in my spending. Soooo... as a compromise, I will be doing daily illustrations, but they are just going to be mini sketches! Roughs! (i.e, not my best work, but better than nothing!).

These were done on the train on the way home today in my new Moleskine journal (pictured below!). I think the lady sitting next to me thought I was a little weird.

Are they more punchy? Well I hope so. I like these two spreads of my cook book anyway! After a trip to Irwin & McClaren book binders today I am wondering if I should just hand the big task over to the professionals, or do it myself. The thought of having everything finished and printed by the end of next week is a little too much to bear, so I may have to just get that bone folder and PVA glue out and do it myself!! And hopefully not ruin it.

Another food post. Spending illustrations on break for 3 weeks :-(

I just finished the 'carne' section of my cook book.

Two illustrations I am pretty proud of are:

I was pretty impressed I got the colour of the raw chicken just right! (I think, anyway).

Feedback received on my book today was that my illustrations need more punch. Ohhh... but how? Hmmm... Due in 3 weeks. Not sure how much more punch I have time for or how much punch I have left in me.

I have been extremely slack on the posting front. But I have a very big excuse in the form of a mammoth illustrated Mexican cook book. I am drawing every day. I am 50 pages into it, and hopefully don't have too much more to go as it is due in 4 weeks! As such, I have not been illustrating my purchases over the past week (but I have been keeping track).

It's too lovely.

Another big drive today to show Lavi Philip Island - but I had never been there either, so it was great for me too! It was a dreary grey day - with a lot (and I mean a lot) of rain around.

First stop a great little dairy farm in Caldermeade. Best scones and awesome coffee!!! YUM.

Of course we went to the Penguin Parade. Paid a little bit more to sit in the "VIP" viewing area, which was right were the little penguins trek past. It was such an amazing experience. They were the cutest little things - I wanted to bundle one up in my bag and take him home. I should add that while waiting for the penguins, the weather turned nasty and bucketed down on us. Freezing cold, soaking wet - but laughing the whole time about how silly it all was. Loved the penguins. Can't wait to go back in Summer!

The design market was followed by a trip up Eureka tower with Lavi - I was so scared I stayed two meters from the glass at all times. Such a wuss.
